Firmware Do Nec Nd3550a I Have An 8x DVD Recordable Drive If I Update The Firmware Can I Use These 16x DVD-R's Or Are They Useless?

I have an 8x DVD Recordable drive if I update the firmware can I use these 16x DVD-R's Or are they useless? - firmware do nec nd3550a

It is a NEC DV-6500A DVD + R DL and I wonder if the updated firmware will do that, you can burn these 16x DVD, which I for Christmas. Thank you for any help you enjoy it.
